Frequently Asked Questions
Do my students need access to technology in the lesson?
No - students don’t need their own devices. The lesson is designed to run from your main projector, using your device. You can invite students to come up and practice the techniques directly on your device as they learn how data is used and how it connects to the maths skill being taught.
If your students do have access to their own devices, that’s even better! Just make sure they have the spreadsheet open during the lesson.
I’m not very confident with technology or spreadsheets - does that matter?
Not at all! Each resource includes short videos, created with our partner businesses, that show you exactly what to do for each task. These video links are built in to the Teacher Notes, so you can just play them as you teach - no prior tech or spreadsheet experience is needed.
We do encourage you to invite students to explore further after the lesson. For this follow-up work, they’ll need access to technology at home or in the library.
Do I need to do lots of preparation?
No - not at all! We recommend just reading through the Teacher Notes before the session. The notes explain:
- What the resource pack contains
- How to prepare for the lesson
- Time needed, skills required, and curriculum links
- Step-by-step instructions for each task, including links to supporting videos
You might need to print a worksheet, but we’ve kept this to a minimum. During the session, all you need to do is have the dataset open so you can navigate between this and your Teachers Notes as needed.
Can the activities be adapted for different age groups or abilities?
Absolutely. The resources are flexible so you can adjust the level of support, the depth of discussion, or the tasks depending on your students’ age, confidence, and ability. This makes the activities suitable for a wide range of learners.
Can students work in groups or pairs?
Yes! Many of the tasks work really well in pairs or small groups. This encourages collaboration, sparks discussion, and helps students develop their communication skills while exploring data and maths in real-world contexts.
How long will the activities take?
The activities are flexible - they can be completed in a single lesson, during form time, or spread across multiple sessions.
This makes them a great way to spark conversation, develop students’ communication skills, and encourage them to think about maths in a different way. You’ll also be showing how communicating numbers and data clearly is an important skill used every day in industry.
What if I encounter technical problems during the session?
Don’t worry! The presentation and videos are designed to run smoothly, but if something goes wrong, you can still guide students using printed worksheets or work through the tasks together on the main device. The lesson is flexible enough to continue even without full tech access.
How do the activities align with the Gatsby Benchmarks and equalex?
Our resources support both frameworks by helping you deliver activities that:
For Gatsby Benchmarks:- Benchmark 4 (Linking curriculum learning to careers): Students will think about how data and maths are used in industry — connecting classroom maths to real‑world careers.
- Benchmark 2 (Learning from career and labour market information): The lesson encourages students to explore how data is used in industry, which builds their awareness of the labour market and careers.
- Benchmark 5 (Encounters with employers and employees) & Benchmark 6 (Experiences of workplaces): By showing students how communicating numbers and data is important in industry, you are linking with employer‑relevant skills and workplace contexts.
- Benchmark 3 (Addressing the needs of each pupil): Because the session requires minimal tech to start, and allows students to work at their own pace, it supports inclusive access for all students regardless of prior tech confidence.
For equalex: - The session supports the “Introduce & Inspire” stage of equalex: giving students a broad view of how data/maths relate to the world of work — which ties into equalex’s "Increased Opportunity Awareness" learning outcome.
- It also supports the “Investigate & Explore” stage: students actively practice techniques and communicate data, developing workplace‑skills behaviours (communication, data use) — all central to equalex’s objectives.
- Because equalex emphasises progress over time for all learners and multiple experiences, this session can form part of that progression.
Will students receive certification after completing each classroom resource?
Yes! Each student can be awarded a partner branded certificate after completing each classroom resource. These certificates help build confidence and aspiration, giving students a real sense of achievement. They’re also a great way to contribute to work experience hours.
A certificate template is in the resource pack which can be downloaded and printed, and each student’s name can be handwritten on their certificate for a personal touch.
